Umrah Without Ihram: What to Do If You Arrived in Jeddah Without Wearing Ihram

Clarifying the Rules of Umrah: Ihram, Miqat, and Sacrifice (Dam) for Pilgrims

Question: Five individuals intended to perform Umrah but arrived in Jeddah without wearing Ihram. They cannot offer a sacrifice (Dam). It has been four days, and it is said that staying for four days makes one a resident. Should they wear Ihram from Jeddah or go to the Miqat?

Answer: The issue of being a traveler or resident does not relate to Umrah. Umrah is a separate matter, and the status of being a traveler or resident is another. You know that during the days of Hajj (Mina, Arafat, and Muzdalifah), pilgrims perform shortened prayers (Qasr), even though most pilgrims are considered residents during these days. This is because it is established from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Similarly, the journey or stay does not relate to Umrah; rather, the rules of Umrah will apply.

Those who traveled to Jeddah with the intention of performing Umrah from their country or city were required to wear Ihram from their Miqat. If they wear Ihram from Jeddah and perform Umrah, they will have to offer a sacrifice (Dam). However, if they return to their Miqat, wear Ihram, and then perform Umrah, they will not have to offer a sacrifice. The four-day stay in Jeddah has no relation to Umrah; the rules of Umrah will be followed.
