Question: If a wife does not want to live with her in-laws, and her husband has the means to provide a separate house, and the wife desires to live separately, will it be a sin for her, especially if living together is affecting their marital life?
Answer: Living in a joint family, which includes brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, and their children, can cause many difficulties. Therefore, such a system should be reconsidered.
Secondly, it is the husband’s responsibility to provide for his wife’s maintenance and accommodation. He should ensure that his wife has a good place to live where he resides.
Thirdly, regarding the specific question, if living separately from the in-laws causes them distress, then the demand for separate accommodation is not justified. Serving one’s parents is the duty of their children. If the husband provides a new place for his wife, would the wife want her husband to stay with his parents while she lives separately? Certainly not.
Thus, it depends on the circumstances. If the situation allows, the wife can request separate accommodation from her husband. However, if the circumstances do not permit, this demand is not justified, as it may lead to injustice towards the husband’s parents due to the wife’s actions.
