In a world filled with unseen forces and challenges, the protection of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) is paramount for every believer. Among the numerous ways of seeking Allah’s protection, the two short but powerful chapters of the Qur’an—Surah Al-Falaq (The Daybreak) and Surah An-Nas (The People)—hold a special place. These two Surahs, often referred to collectively as “Al-Mu’awwidhatain” (the two Surahs of seeking refuge), were revealed to provide protection from the harmful forces of evil, including jinn and the evil eye.
The significance of these Surahs and their role in safeguarding believers is deeply rooted in the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). Let us delve into their meanings, the reasons for their revelation, and their practical applications in our daily lives.
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) taught his companions and the entire Ummah to recite these two Surahs regularly as a means of protection. Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated:
“The Prophet (ﷺ) used to seek protection against the evil of jinn and the evil eye until Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas were revealed. After they were revealed, he took to them for seeking Allah’s protection and left everything besides them.”
(At-Tirmidhi, Riyadh-us-Salihin)
This narration reflects the immense power these two Surahs hold. Prior to their revelation, the Prophet (ﷺ) would seek refuge in Allah from various sources of harm through his own personal supplications. However, with the revelation of Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas, Allah provided a concise and effective means of protection, and the Prophet (ﷺ) adopted their recitation as his primary means of seeking refuge.
To fully appreciate the significance of these two Surahs, it is important to understand the concepts they address.
Just as humans are created from clay, jinn are created from smokeless fire, as stated in the Qur’an. While many jinn are good, obedient to Allah, and invisible to the human eye, others are mischievous and malicious. These evil jinn can sometimes cause harm to humans by disturbing their peace, causing sickness, or leading them into misfortune.
The Prophet (ﷺ) sought protection from such harmful beings, for their power to harm was undeniable. Allah has granted them certain abilities, and without His protection, human beings can fall prey to their influence. This is why the Prophet (ﷺ) sought refuge in Allah from the evil of the jinn, especially those who wish to cause harm.
The concept of the “evil eye” refers to the harmful effects that a person can cause through envy or jealousy. This is not simply a superstition but is grounded in the teachings of the Qur’an and Hadith. When someone looks at another with envy or greed, without seeking Allah’s protection, it can result in harm to the person being looked at. This harm can manifest in many forms: illness, loss of wealth, accidents, or other forms of misfortune.
In a famous Hadith, the Prophet (ﷺ) said:
“The evil eye is real, and if anything would precede the Divine decree, it would be the evil eye.”
(Sahih Muslim)
Thus, both the jinn and the evil eye are real threats that can have a negative impact on a person’s life. But Allah, in His mercy, has provided us with a simple yet powerful solution.
Both Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas were revealed for the purpose of protecting the believer from these unseen harms. Their concise verses make them easy to memorize and recite, and their meanings cover all potential sources of evil. Together, they serve as a complete safeguard for the believer.
Surah Al-Falaq, the 113th chapter of the Qur’an, begins with the words:
“Say, ‘I seek refuge in the Lord of the daybreak, from the evil of that which He created, from the evil of the darkening when it settles, from the evil of the blowers in knots, and from the evil of the envier when he envies.'”
(Qur’an 113:1-5)
This Surah asks for protection from various forms of harm:
Surah An-Nas, the 114th chapter of the Qur’an, is even more direct in seeking refuge from harm:
“Say, ‘I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind, the King of mankind, the God of mankind, from the evil of the whisperer who withdraws, who whispers in the breasts of mankind, of jinn and of mankind.'”
(Qur’an 114:1-6)
In this Surah, the believer seeks refuge from the evil whispers of both jinn and human beings. It highlights the subtle and harmful whispers that may come into a person’s heart, leading them astray or causing doubt, fear, and anxiety.
Reciting Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas regularly serves as a powerful shield against all forms of evil. The Prophet (ﷺ) himself recited them for protection, and he taught his companions to do the same. These Surahs offer several benefits:
The importance of seeking Allah’s protection from harmful forces cannot be overstated. Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas offer us a clear and effective means of safeguarding ourselves from both seen and unseen dangers. By regularly reciting these Surahs, we align ourselves with the Prophet’s (ﷺ) practice and place our trust in Allah’s mercy and power.
In our fast-paced and uncertain world, it is crucial to remember that true protection comes from Allah alone. While we take necessary precautions in our worldly matters, our ultimate refuge lies in the recitation of these blessed Surahs, which are the perfect safeguard against every evil. May we all be granted the wisdom to recite them regularly and seek Allah’s protection from all harm.
