The Correct Way to Make Dua: Understanding Intercession in Islam

Is It Permissible to Use the Prophet’s ﷺ Intercession in Dua?

Question: While making dua (supplication), people ask through the Sadqe (intercession) of the Prophet ﷺ. Is this practice correct?

Answer: In the light of authentic Hadith, there are only three valid types of intercession (wasilah) when making dua, and beyond these three, no other type of intercession is permissible:

1. It is permissible to use the names of Allah (Asma ul-Husna) as a means of intercession.

2. It is permissible to use one’s own good deeds as a means of intercession.

3. It is permissible to ask a living person to pray for you.

Beyond these three types, using any other form of intercession—whether it is through the Prophet ﷺ, a saint (wali), a martyr (shaheed), or anyone else—is not permissible. There are some narrations regarding using the status of the Prophet ﷺ for intercession, but none of them are authentic. Therefore, saying in your dua, “O Allah, accept this for the sake of the Prophet” or “Accept this for the sake of the Prophet’s status” is not permissible. We should directly pray to Allah, as Allah Himself commands:

"And your Lord says: Call upon Me; I will respond to you." [Surah Ghafir: 60]

This means that Allah has commanded us to call upon Him directly, without any intermediaries.
