Understanding the Impact of Curses and Accountability on the Day of Judgment

Do Curses from Others Affect Us? Insights on Accountability and Justice in Islam

Question:If I take back something from a woman that belongs to me, she curses me, raises her hands in supplication against me, and says that she will hold me accountable on the Day of Judgment. She cries and curses me. Can these curses affect me, and will she hold me accountable on the Day of Judgment, even though the item is mine and I had given it to her for use, and now I need it back?

Answer: If you lend someone your belongings and they curse you and insult you when you ask for them back, you should remain patient and pray for their guidance instead of retaliating. Regarding their curses and insults, they will not harm you; rather, they may benefit you. According to a hadith in Sahih Muslim, a person will come on the Day of Judgment with many good deeds, but their good deeds will be distributed among those they wronged, insulted, or oppressed. Therefore, there is no need to fear someone’s curses and unjust supplications. We should remain patient and pray for their guidance. It is possible that you might have wronged them in some way, as it is unusual for someone to curse and insult just for asking for their belongings back. If there was any wrongdoing on your part, you should rectify it. If there was no wrongdoing on your part, remain patient and pray for their guidance.
