Understanding the Timing of Zuhr and Asr Prayers in Islam
Question: If a person catches only one unit (rak’ah) of the Zuhr prayer and the time for Asr starts, can they perform the Zuhr Sunnah prayers after completing the Zuhr obligatory prayer?
Answer: If a person is able to catch the Zuhr prayer right before the time of Asr begins, they should first offer the obligatory Zuhr prayer to ensure it is performed within its time. Afterward, they can perform the Sunnah prayers. This is not an issue. Similarly, if this happens during the time of Fajr and there is only time to perform the obligatory prayer, one should perform the obligatory prayer first, followed by the Sunnah afterward, to ensure the obligatory prayer is performed on time.
Abu Hurairah narrated that the Prophet (PBUH) said:
مَن أَدْرَكَ مِنَ الصُّبْحِ رَكْعَةً قَبْلَ أَنْ تَطْلُعَ الشَّمْسُ، فقَدْ أَدْرَكَ الصُّبْحَ، ومَن أَدْرَكَ رَكْعَةً مِنَ العَصْرِ قَبْلَ أَنْ تَغْرُبَ الشَّمْسُ، فقَدْ أَدْرَكَ العَصْرَ(صحيح البخاري:579)
Translation: Whoever could get one rak`a (of the Fajr prayer) before sunrise, he has got the (morning) prayer and whoever could get one rak`a of the `Asr prayer before sunset, he has got the (`Asr) prayer.”
