The Virtue and Significance of Zamzam Water in Islam
Question: I have heard that Zamzam is considered blessed because it originates from a river in Paradise and Allah has made it blessed. Is this true, or is it a miracle that occurred by Allah’s command and is associated with a specific prophet?
Answer: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) declared Zamzam to be blessed. When the Prophet declares something as blessed, it is indeed blessed. In Sahih Muslim, it is mentioned that a man survived for thirty days by drinking only Zamzam. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “It is blessed; it is food that nourishes” (Sahih Muslim: 2473). This means that Zamzam water is blessed and can fill the stomach like food.
The angel Jibril (Gabriel) washed the chest of the Prophet (peace be upon him) with Zamzam water, which indicates its virtue. It is also narrated by Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that Zamzam is one of the springs of Paradise.
In summary, Zamzam is blessed water, one of the springs of Paradise, a miracle that occurred by Allah’s command, and it is associated with Prophet Ismail (Ishmael) (peace be upon him).
