Does Setting Aside Gold for Daughters’ Marriage Affect Zakat Obligation?
Question: A sister says that she has 100 grams of gold and her financial condition is not good enough to pay Zakat. She has been paying Zakat until last year, but now it is difficult to manage. She has three daughters. If she sets aside a portion for their marriage, will she still have to pay Zakat?
Answer: A sister who has 100 grams of gold is required to pay Zakat annually. However, if she intends to give gold to her daughters for their marriage and sets aside portions for them now, there is no issue with that. She can allocate portions for her daughters and must give them their share when they get married. In this case, if the gold amount falls below the Nisab (minimum threshold), she will not be required to pay Zakat.
