Guidance on Broken Hair for Women: Disposal and Selling in Islam

What Should Women Do with Broken Hair? Islamic Guidance and Considerations

Question: What should girls do with their broken hair? Often, people who buy hair roam around in the streets. What guidance does the Hadith provide on this matter?

Answer: The fundamental issue is that a woman should not cut her hair, but the hair that breaks off while combing can be disposed of anywhere. However, it is better to bury it or throw it in a place where it is not visible to people because a woman’s hair can be attractive and a source of temptation. Therefore, it is appropriate to dispose of it in a suitable place. It is not that a woman’s broken hair cannot be seen by anyone; a person can see it. I am only suggesting disposing of it in a suitable place as a precaution because there are some people with ill intentions in society, and in many places, deceitful practitioners (those who perform exorcisms) scare women in various ways about their hair.

As for the issue of selling hair, no woman can sell her hair to anyone. Selling hair is not permissible. Therefore, if someone comes to the village or neighborhood to buy hair, do not sell your hair to them. Inform other Muslim women about this and advise them not to sell their hair either.
