Islamic Ruling on Women Wearing Sunglasses for Protection or Adornment
Question: Is it permissible for a woman to use sunglasses to reduce glare and protect her eyes? What is the ruling if they are worn for fashion and adornment?
Answer: Allah has commanded women to conceal their adornment, and sunglasses can be considered a form of adornment. Therefore, if a woman wears sunglasses in a way that attracts attention, it is not permissible. However, if a woman wears sunglasses out of necessity, such as to protect her eyes from the sun, and does so in a manner that does not attract the attention of strangers, then there is no harm in it. I believe that a woman who observes proper hijab does not need to wear sunglasses. Wearing prescription glasses for medical reasons is permissible.
As for wearing sunglasses for fashion or adornment and going out to show them off, it is not permissible because it can lead to fitnah (temptation).
