Naming After the Prophet Muhammad: Permissible or Prohibited?
Question: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was in the market when someone called out, “O Abu al-Qasim!” The Prophet turned towards him, but it turned out that the person was calling someone else. The Prophet then said, “Name yourselves after me, but do not use my Kunya (nickname).” (Sahih Bukhari: 3537) In light of this Hadith, if someone’s name is Qasim, can his father be called Abu al-Qasim?
Answer: This Hadith is found in Sahih Bukhari. Based on this Hadith, some scholars say that it is permissible to name someone after the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), but it is prohibited to use his Kunya. However, other scholars argue that this prohibition was only during the lifetime of the Prophet (peace be upon him). After his death, it is permissible to use both his name and his Kunya. There is also a Hadith in Abu Dawood where Muhammad bin Hanafiyyah narrates that Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “I asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah! If I have a son after you, can I name him after you and use your Kunya?’ He replied, ‘Yes.'” (Abu Dawood: 4967, authenticated by Al-Albani)
Therefore, there is no harm in using the name Abu al-Qasim, and if someone’s son’s name is Qasim, it is permissible to call him Abu al-Qasim.
