The Continuity of Marital Relationships After a Husband’s Death
Question: Respected Sheikh! In one of your statements, you mentioned that the relationship between husband and wife does not end with the husband’s death. My question is, if the relationship does not end after death, what happens when a woman, after completing her waiting period, remarries? Does her previous relationship end or not?
Answer: When a woman’s husband passes away, the relationship does not end with his death; he remains her husband. Therefore, she observes a mourning period of four months and ten days for her husband. This mourning is only permissible for the wife; men are not allowed to mourn in this way.
At the same time, Allah has permitted a woman to remarry after completing the waiting period following her husband’s death. This is a permission granted by Allah to the woman. You know that Allah has allowed men to have up to four wives simultaneously, and a man can be the sole husband of four women at the same time. However, Allah has not permitted a woman to have more than one husband at a time, but He has allowed her to remarry after her husband’s death.
