From the commentary on the Book of Tawheed by Shaykhul-Islaam Muhammad bin Abdil-Wahhaab may Allaah have mercy on him, 88th-91st, Lesson
By Shaykh, the ‘Allāmah, the Trustworthy Advisor, Abu ‘Abdirrahmān Yahya bin ‘Ali Al-Hajūri – may Allāh preserve him – on the 18th, Jumaada’ Al-Aakhirah, 1444H
Chapter: Whoever obeys the scholars and rulers in making impermissible what Allaah made permissible or making permissible what Allaah made impermissible, then he has taken lords other than Allaah
And Ibn ‘Abbaas said: “Stone from the sky are almost about to descend upon you, I say to you Allaah’s Messenger ﷺ said, and you are saying Abu Bakr and ‘Umar said?”
And Imaam Ahmed said: “I am amazed at a people who are aware of the chain of narration and its authenticity, then they go along with the opinion of Sufyaan, and Allaah says:
“So let those beware who dissent from his [i.e., the Prophet’s] order, lest fitnah strike them or a painful punishment.”
Do you know what the fitnah is? The fitnah is Shirk; perhaps if he rejects some of his statements some deviance will enter his heart and therefore be ruined.”
And ‘Adiyy bin Haatim said: “That he heard the Prophet ﷺ reading this verse:
"They have taken their scholars and monks as lords besides Allah, and [also] the Messiah, the son of Mary. And they were not commanded except to worship one God; there is no deity except Him. Exalted is He above whatever they associate with Him" .
[At-Tawbah: 31]
So I said: “Verily we didn’t worship them.” So he said: “Did they not make impermissible what Allaah made permissible and so you all made it impermissible? And they made permissible what Allaah made impermissible so you all made it permissible? So I said: “Yes.” He said: “That is worshiping them.”
[Reported by Ahmed and At-Tirmidhi and he declared it Hasan]
In it are Masaa’il (topics):
The First: Tafseer of the verse of An-Noor.
The Second: Tafseer of the verse of Al-Baraa’ah.
The Third: Bringing attention to the meaning of worship which ‘Adiyy rebuked.
The Fourth: Ibn’ Abbaas using Abu Bakr and ‘Umar as an example and Ahmed using Sufyaan as an example.
The Fifth: The state being reverted to this so much so that worshipping the priests has become with the majority the best of actions, and it’s called loyalty, and worshipping the scholars is knowledge and understanding, then the affair went to worshipping other than Allaah those who are not from the righteous, and worshipping with the second meaning those who are from the ignorant.
