The Dangers of Exceeding the Bounds in Religion: Lessons from the Book of Tawheed

Chapter: What has come that the cause of the Kufr of the Bani Ādam and their abandonment of their religion is exceeding the bounds in regards to the righteous

29th-30th Lesson from the Book of Tawheed by Shaykhul-Islaam Muhammad bin Abdil-Wahhaab

بســـم اللــه الرحــمــن الـرحـــيــم

From the commentary on the Book of Tawheed by Shaykhul-Islaam Muhammad bin Abdil-Wahhaab may Allaah have mercy on him, 29th-30th, Lesson

By Shaykh, the ‘Allāmah, the Trustworthy Advisor, Abu ‘Abdirrahmān Yahya bin ‘Ali Al-Hajūri – may Allāh preserve him – on the 6th, Rajab, 1443H

Chapter: What has come that the cause of the Kufr of the Bani Ādam and their abandonment of their religion is exceeding the bounds in regards to the righteous

His statement:

(يَٰٓأَهْلَ ٱلْكِتَٰبِ لَا تَغْلُوا۟ فِى دِينِكُمْ وَلَا تَقُولُوا۟ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ إِلَّا ٱلْحَقَّۚ) 

"O people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians)! Do not exceed the limits in your religion, nor say of Allah aught but the truth."

[An-Nisaa’: 171]

And in the two Sahihs from Ibn ‘Abbaas may Allaah be pleased with him: 

(وَقَالُوا۟ لَا تَذَرُنَّ ءَالِهَتَكُمْ وَلَا تَذَرُنَّ وَدًّا وَلَا سُوَاعًا وَلَا يَغُوثَ وَيَعُوقَ وَنَسْرًا) 

"And they have said: 'You shall not leave your gods, nor shall you leave Wadd, nor Suwa', nor Yaghuth, nor Ya'uq, nor Nasr (names of the idols);"

[Nuh: 23]

He said: “These are the names of righteous people from the people of Nuh, so when they passed away the Shaitaan inspired to their people to make stone altars at the sittings where they used to sit, and name it after their names, so they did it. And they weren’t worshipped until those ones passed away and the knowledge was lost, then they were worshipped.”

And Ibn Al-Qayyim said: “More than one of the Salaf said: “When they died they surrounded their graves, then they made their statues, then as time went on they worshipped them.” 

And from ‘Umar: That the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ said:

لاَ تُطْرُونِي كَمَا أَطْرَتِ النَّصَارَى ابْنَ مَرْيَمَ، فَإِنَّمَا أَنَا عَبْدُهُ، فَقُولُوا: عَبْدُ اللَّهِ وَرَسُولُهُ

"Don't go out of bounds in praising me, like the Nasāra did with the son of Maryam, I am only His slave, so say: the Slave of Allah and His Messenger."

[Reported by Bukhaari and Muslim]

And He said: And the Prophet ﷺ said: "Be aware of exceeding the bounds, for verily what destroyed those who came before you was exceeding the bounds."

And from Ibn Mas’ood: That the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ said: “The extremists have perished.” – He said it three times.
