Understanding Tahiyyat al-Masjid: The Greeting Prayer Upon Entering the Mosque

Can You Offer Tahiyyat al-Masjid When Entering the Mosque for a Program?

Question: When entering the mosque for a religious program, can we offer the prayer of Tahiyyat al-Masjid?

Answer: When you enter the mosque for a program, you should first perform the two rakats of Tahiyyat al-Masjid before sitting, as it is a sign of respect for the mosque. Whenever you enter the mosque, you should be in a state of ablution so that you can perform the two rakats upon entry. The Prophet ﷺ said:

Abu Qatada (RA) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:

"When one of you enters the mosque, he should not sit until he prays two rakats." (Sahih Muslim: 714)
