al-Hasan al-Basri رحمه الله stated:
The roots of evil are three and its branches are six.
As for the three roots of evil:
1. Jealousy (envy)
2. Greed
3. Love of the life of this world
As for the six branches of evil:
1. The love of always sleeping.
2. The love of always having one’s belly full.
3. The love of always resting.
4. The love of leadership.
5. The love of being praised by people.
6. The love of bragging.
