Missed Asr Prayer Due to Sleep: Performing the Correct Order

Fulfilling Missed Prayers When Waking Up After Asr

Question: If one falls asleep at the time of Asr prayer and wakes up at the time of Maghrib prayer, should they first make up the missed Asr prayer or perform the Maghrib prayer first?

Answer: First and foremost, Allah, the Lord of all worlds, has made the night for our sleep. Therefore, we should sleep at the proper time and avoid sleeping at other times without necessity, especially when there is a risk of missing prayers. However, if someone has to sleep after Asr due to necessity, they may do so. Nowadays, it is convenient to set an alarm for prayer or appoint someone to wake them up so that they can perform the prayer on time. If someone misses the Asr prayer while sleeping and wakes up at the time of Maghrib, they should first perform the missed Asr prayer because it comes first in order, and then perform the Maghrib prayer.

Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

"Whoever forgets a prayer or sleeps through its time, its expiation is to pray it when he remembers it." (Sahih Muslim: 684)

This hadith indicates that if someone misses a prayer due to sleep, they should perform the missed prayer first upon waking up, as this is the expiation for the missed prayer.
