Question: Is it necessary to perform Istinja (cleaning the private parts) for every Wudu (ablution) apart from relieving oneself?
Answer: Some people have the misconception that it is necessary to perform Istinja before Wudu every morning, regardless of whether one has urinated or defecated. This has no basis in Islamic Shariah and is a false notion. Similarly, it is also false that Istinja must be performed before every Wudu apart from relieving oneself.
Wudu has no connection with relieving oneself or Istinja. Relieving oneself and Istinja are separate matters, and Wudu is a separate matter. For performing Salah (prayer), the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) has only instructed us to perform Wudu beforehand, not Istinja or relieving oneself, as he said:
"Prayer is not accepted without purification, nor is charity accepted from earnings made through deceit." (Tirmidhi: 1)
This hadith makes it clear that we only need to perform Wudu before Salah. However, if someone needs to relieve themselves, they should do so first and then perform Wudu.
