Question: While praying, looking towards the sky is prohibited. Is it allowed to look towards the sky while making supplication?
Answer: Looking towards the sky during prayer is prohibited. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “What is wrong with those people who look towards the sky during the prayer?” His talk grew stern while delivering this speech and he said, “They should stop (looking towards the sky during the prayer); otherwise their eyesight would be taken away.”(Bukhari: 750).
However, this prohibition applies only during prayer. Looking towards the sky while making supplication outside of prayer is permissible, as there is no general prohibition against it.
