Question: If the Dhuhr prayer is delayed and performed with the Asr prayer, should only the obligatory (Fard) prayers be performed or the complete prayers?
Answer: Before knowing the specific answer, it is essential to understand the basic issue related to this. Men are required to perform all five prayers in congregation at the mosque, while women are exempt from congregation, and their prayer at home is better. Each prayer has its beginning and end time, and women should perform each prayer within this time, although performing the prayer at its earliest time is preferable. It is not permissible to delay the prayer beyond its time and perform it as Qada (missed prayer) unless there is an excuse.
There are two ways to combine prayers: one is combining at the earlier time (Jam’ Taqdim) and the other is combining at the later time (Jam’ Ta’khir). There are also two conditions: one is during travel and the other is while residing.
When you are traveling and combine prayers either by Jam’ Taqdim or Jam’ Ta’khir, you do not need to perform the Sunnah prayers (except for Witr and Sunnah of Fajr), only the obligatory prayers. However, when you are residing and combine two prayers due to an excuse, you should perform both the obligatory and Sunnah prayers.
