Understanding Reconciliation in Islam: When is a New Marriage Required?
Question: The husband divorced his wife, and she went to her parents’ home. Two menstrual cycles passed, and the husband intended to reconcile but did not know the exact words to say. He said, “I want to rebuild my home, I want my wife to come back, I am sorry, I made a mistake.” Has the reconciliation happened, or is a new marriage required after the waiting period since the wife is still at her parents’ home and three menstrual cycles have passed?
Answer: When the husband expressed his regret to his wife during the waiting period and said, “I want to rebuild my home, I want my wife to come back,” this statement is considered as reconciliation. Therefore, the marital relationship remains intact, and the wife can return to her husband’s home whenever she wishes. There is no need for a new marriage.
