بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
In the Name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
The Qur’ān is the final revelation of Allāh ﷻ, sent as a comprehensive guide for all of humanity. Its recitation, contemplation, and application elevate individuals and nations, while neglecting or disregarding it leads to disgrace and downfall. This reality is beautifully encapsulated in a hadith narrated by ʿUmar bin al-Khattab (may Allāh be pleased with him), in which the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said:
“Verily, Allāh elevates some people with this Qur’ān and abases others.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim)
This statement holds profound wisdom. It reveals that honor, dignity, and success are not granted based on wealth, lineage, or worldly power, but rather on one’s relationship with the Qur’ān. Those who adhere to its guidance are elevated in this world and the Hereafter, while those who abandon it face humiliation and disgrace.
History bears witness to the truth of this hadith. The early generations of Muslims—the Ṣaḥābah (Companions), the Tābiʿīn (Successors), and the generations that followed them—achieved greatness because of their unwavering commitment to the Qur’ān.
The Qur’ān purified their hearts, strengthened their īmān (faith), and elevated their character. They embodied the qualities of patience, humility, justice, and mercy, as commanded by the Qur’ān. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) described the best of people as those who embody the Qur’ān in their character:
“The best of you are those who learn the Qur’ān and teach it.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī)
This attachment to the Qur’ān transformed ordinary individuals into exemplary leaders, scholars, and righteous individuals. Their spiritual connection with the Qur’ān elevated them in the sight of Allāh and among people.
The Qur’ān provided a comprehensive framework for social justice, human rights, and moral conduct. It eradicated the evils of ignorance, tribalism, and oppression, replacing them with a system based on justice and equality. The Qur’ān says:
“Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allāh is the most righteous of you.”
(Surah Al-Ḥujurāt, 49:13)
By adhering to this divine guidance, the early Muslims established a society that was a beacon of justice, compassion, and righteousness. Their social and moral excellence earned them respect and admiration from both friends and foes.
The Qur’ān also provided guidance in governance, economy, and international relations. Leaders like ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (may Allāh be pleased with him) implemented Qur’ānic principles in their rule, ensuring justice, fairness, and prosperity for all citizens, regardless of their faith or background.
This adherence to the Qur’ān led to the establishment of one of the most powerful and just civilizations in history. Muslim lands flourished in science, medicine, mathematics, astronomy, and literature, making significant contributions to human knowledge and progress.
Just as adherence to the Qur’ān leads to elevation, neglecting it results in humiliation and disgrace. Allāh warns us in the Qur’ān about the consequences of turning away from His guidance:
“But whoever turns away from My Reminder will certainly have a miserable life, and We will raise them up blind on the Day of Judgment.”
(Surah Ṭāhā, 20:124)
Nations and individuals who abandon the teachings of the Qur’ān suffer both spiritually and materially. Their moral compass is lost, leading to corruption, injustice, and social decay.
When the Qur’ān is neglected, the heart becomes hardened, and the light of faith diminishes. Sins and immoral behavior take root, leading to spiritual degradation. The Prophet (ﷺ) warned:
“The Qur’ān is either a proof for you or against you.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim)
Those who neglect the Qur’ān lose its intercession on the Day of Judgment, and instead, it will testify against them.
Without the moral guidance of the Qur’ān, societies descend into moral chaos. Justice is replaced with oppression, honesty with deceit, and compassion with cruelty. The Prophet (ﷺ) described such times:
Anas bin Malik narrated that the Messenger of Allah(s.a.w) said:
“There shall come upon the people a time in which the one who is patient upon his religion will be like the one holding onto a burning ember.”
(Jāmiʿ at-Tirmidhī)
Such societies lose the respect and honor they once enjoyed, becoming weak and fragmented.
The Qur’ān provides guidance on economic justice, fair trade, and responsible governance. When these principles are ignored, corruption, greed, and inequality become rampant. Nations that once prospered face economic collapse and political instability.
The solution to the current state of the Muslim Ummah lies in reconnecting with the Qur’ān. This requires more than just recitation; it involves understanding, contemplating, and implementing its teachings in every aspect of life.
Every Muslim should strive to develop a personal relationship with the Qur’ān through regular recitation, memorization, and contemplation. Allāh says:
“Do they not reflect upon the Qur’ān, or are there locks upon their hearts?”
(Surah Muḥammad, 47:24)
Reflecting upon the Qur’ān opens the heart to its guidance and wisdom.
Families and communities should prioritize teaching the Qur’ān to the next generation. Islamic education should focus on both the memorization and understanding of the Qur’ān, instilling its values in young minds.
Muslim leaders and scholars have a responsibility to implement Qur’ānic principles in governance, economics, and social affairs. Justice, compassion, and accountability must be the foundation of any Muslim society.
May Allāh ﷻ guide us to hold firmly to the Qur’ān, to love it, recite it, and live by it. May He elevate us in this world and the Hereafter and protect us from the humiliation of neglecting His divine guidance.
“Our Lord, grant us from Yourself mercy and prepare for us from our affair right guidance.”
(Surah Al-Kahf, 18:10)
اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْ الْقُرْآنَ رَبِيعَ قُلُوبِنَا وَنُورَ صُدُورِنَا وَجَلَاءَ أَحْزَانِنَا وَذَهَابَ هُمُومِنَا وَغُمُومِنَا
“O Allāh, make the Qur’ān the spring of our hearts, the light of our chests, the remover of our sorrows, and the alleviation of our worries and anxieties.”
