Imagine a day when the entire cosmos collapses—skies split asunder, stars plummet, mountains dissolve into dust, and every human being, from the first soul created to the last, rises from their graves to face their Creator. This is the Day of Judgment, or Yawm al-Qiyamah, a fundamental pillar of Islamic belief that defines the purpose of life and the reality of the hereafter.1 Rooted in the Quran and the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and understood through the lens of the Salafi methodology—following the way of the righteous predecessors (Salaf as-Salih)—this concept underscores the fleeting nature of worldly existence and the eternal consequences awaiting every soul.
The Day of Judgment is the moment when Allah, the Exalted, will resurrect all of creation to account for their beliefs, actions, and intentions.2 It is one of the six pillars of faith (Iman) in Islam, making its belief obligatory for every Muslim.3 This day represents the culmination of divine justice, where the righteous are rewarded with eternal bliss in Paradise (Jannah), and the wicked face retribution in Hellfire (Jahannam).4 The Quran describes it as a day of unimaginable magnitude:5
“When the earth is shaken with its [final] earthquake, and the earth discharges its burdens, and man says, ‘What is wrong with it?’—that Day, it will report its news.” (Quran 99:1-4)
This belief instills accountability, reminding Muslims that every deed, even as small as an atom’s weight, is recorded by angels and will be presented before Allah, where no intercessor can avail except by His permission.
Islamic teachings detail specific signs that will precede Yawm al-Qiyamah, categorized into minor signs and major signs. These serve as warnings for humanity to repent and prepare, reflecting the Salafi emphasis on authentic textual evidence.
The minor signs are subtle yet pervasive changes in the world, many of which are already manifest today. Authentic Hadiths, as understood by the Salaf, highlight:
These signs, witnessed in modern times, urge Muslims to cling to the Quran and Sunnah, avoiding innovations (Bid’ah) as emphasized by the Salafi methodology.
The major signs are dramatic, supernatural occurrences signaling the Hour’s nearness. Narrated in authentic Hadiths, they include:
“The Hour will not come until you see ten signs: the smoke, the Dajjal, the beast, the sun rising from the west…” (Sahih Muslim)
These events, preserved in Sahih narrations, affirm the Salafi rejection of weak or fabricated reports.
Yawm al-Qiyamah will unfold in awe-inspiring stages, each meticulously detailed in the Quran and Sunnah.
The angel Israfil will sound the trumpet twice. The first, Nafkhah al-Faza’, will annihilate all life, collapsing the universe. The second, Nafkhah al-Ba’ath, will resurrect creation.
“And the trumpet will be blown, and whoever is in the heavens and the earth will fall dead except whom Allah wills.11 Then it will be blown again, and they will rise, gazing around.” (Quran 39:68)
Allah will recreate every human, restoring their bodies perfectly to stand accountable.12 This miracle refutes those who deny resurrection, as Allah states:
“Does man think We cannot reassemble his bones? Yes, We are able to restore even his fingertips.” (Quran 75:3-4)
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “People will be resurrected barefoot, naked, and uncircumcised,” (Sahih Bukhari), highlighting their vulnerability.
Humanity will assemble on a vast plain, under a sun drawn near, drenched in sweat proportional to their deeds.13 The Quran paints this scene:
“The Day We roll up the heavens like a scroll… As We began the first creation, We will repeat it.” (Quran 21:104)
Some will find shade under Allah’s Throne, a mercy for the righteous, as per Sahih narrations.14
Each soul will face a precise accounting, receiving their book of deeds—right hand for the saved, left or behind for the damned.15
“Whoever does an atom’s weight of good will see it, and whoever does an atom’s weight of evil will see it.” (Quran 99:7-8)
Limbs will testify against sinners, ensuring undeniable justice.16
A narrow bridge over Hellfire will test every soul. The pious will cross swiftly, while the wicked fall into torment.
“There is none of you but will pass over it; this is with your Lord a decree fulfilled.” (Quran 19:71)
The final judgment will determine eternal fates, reflecting Allah’s justice and mercy.17
Believers who adhered to Tawheed and righteousness will enter Jannah, a realm of unimaginable beauty—rivers of milk, honey, and wine, and the vision of Allah.
“Gardens beneath which rivers flow, where they will abide forever.” (Quran 3:15)18
Some Muslims with sins may endure Hellfire briefly before Allah’s mercy admits them to Jannah.
“Whoever comes with a good deed will have ten times its like…” (Quran 6:160)19
Rejectors of faith will face eternal torment—fire, boiling water, and chains.
“Indeed, Hell lies in wait for the transgressors…” (Quran 78:21-22)
Intercession by the Prophet (peace be upon him), granted by Allah’s permission, offers hope for some.
This belief shapes Muslim life by:
“Let every soul look to what it has sent ahead for tomorrow…” (Quran 59:18)
