Supplication and Steps to Seek Protection from a Husband’s Oppression in Islam

How to Seek Protection and Address a Husband’s Oppression: Islamic Guidance

Question: What is the supplication to seek protection from a husband’s oppression?

Answer: There is no specific supplication in Islam to seek protection from an oppressive husband. If a husband is oppressive, action should be taken. First, advise him by reminding him of Allah’s punishment for oppression. If self-correction is not possible, seek guidance from a knowledgeable scholar. If he still does not change his behavior, a committee should be formed to pass a resolution against him, warning of disciplinary action if he continues his oppression. The wife should also consider whether her own behavior is contributing to the oppression. If the oppression persists despite attempts at correction, she should remain patient, as patience brings great rewards. She can also privately pray for her husband’s guidance, especially during blessed times. However, if the oppression becomes unbearable, seeking separation through divorce or khula is permissible, though patience is better if it is bearable.
