Performing Tawaf and Umrah on Behalf of Others: Rules and Guidelines

Can You Perform Tawaf and Umrah on Behalf of Others? Understanding the Rules

Question: Can we perform a voluntary Tawaf on behalf of someone else, and can we perform Umrah on behalf of someone else, whether they are alive or deceased?

Answer: A person cannot perform Tawaf on behalf of another individual, whether that person is alive or deceased. A person can only perform Tawaf for themselves, as there is no evidence from the Hadith supporting the practice of performing Tawaf on behalf of others.

Regarding performing Umrah on behalf of someone else, the rulings are as follows:

  • If the person is alive and in good health, they cannot have Umrah performed on their behalf; a healthy person must perform their own Umrah.
  • However, if the person is alive but physically incapacitated and unable to perform Umrah due to a condition that has made it obligatory for them, another person can perform Umrah on their behalf, provided that the one performing the Umrah on their behalf has already completed their own Umrah.
  • As for performing Umrah on behalf of a deceased person, close relatives, such as a father or mother who have passed away, can have Umrah performed on their behalf by their children.
