Menstrual Cycle Irregularities: Ruling on Prayers for Women with Prolonged Brown Spotting

Understanding Menstrual Cycle Variations and Their Impact on Prayer

Question: A woman has an issue with her menstrual cycle. For the first two to four days, she only sees brown spots, then for two or three days, she has menstrual blood, and then for the last two or three days, she again sees only brown spots. This cycle lasts for about nine to ten days, and this has been happening for the past two to three years, whereas her usual cycle was only five or six days. What is the ruling on her prayers in this situation?

Answer: If the brown spots appear immediately before or after the menstrual blood, they are considered part of the menstrual period. However, if these spots appear separately from the menstrual blood, they are not considered part of the menstrual period. The primary consideration is the actual menstrual blood, not the usual cycle length. However, if the situation involves irregular bleeding (istihada), then the usual cycle length can be taken into account.
