Ibn Ulayyah narrated a hadith to us, from al-Qasim ibn Mihran, from Abu Rafi, from Abu Huraira (RA), that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saw phlegm in the direction of the Qibla of the mosque, so he turned to the people and said: “What is the matter with one of you that he stands facing his Lord and then spits in front of him? Would any of you like to be faced and then be spat in the face? So when one of you needs to clear his throat, he should spit to his left, under his foot. If he does not find room for that, then he should do this.” Al-Qasim demonstrated by spitting into his garment, then rubbing one part of it on the other.

Mr. Iyad ibn Abdullah narrates from Sayyiduna Abu Said al-Khudri (RA) that the Prophet (ﷺ) was fond of the branches of date-palm clusters, and there was always a branch in his blessed hand. (Once) he entered the mosque and saw phlegm on the Qibla wall. He scraped it off and then turned to the people, angry. He said, “Would any of you like to be spat in the face? When one of you faces the Qibla, he is facing his Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, and the angel is on his right side. Therefore, let no one spit to his right or towards his Qibla. If he must spit, let him spit to his left or under his foot. If he is in a hurry, let him do this.” Then Ibn Ajlan demonstrated that by spitting into his garment and then rubbing it together.
