Can a Husband Divorce His Wife at His Father’s Request? Exploring the Islamic Perspective
Question: What is the ruling on forcibly divorcing one’s wife at the behest of one’s father, and is the incident of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) instructing his son to divorce his wife often cited in this context?
Answer: A wife should only be divorced if there is a legitimate Islamic reason. It is not permissible to divorce a wife simply because someone, even parents, instructs it without a valid reason.
While obedience to parents is obligatory, it is limited to matters that are permissible and just. Nowadays, many parents demand the divorce of their daughters-in-law due to family pride or other non-Islamic reasons. In this context, the fatwa of Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal (may Allah have mercy on him) is very relevant.
A man once asked Imam Ahmad if he should divorce his wife because his father ordered it. Imam Ahmad replied that he should not divorce his wife. The man then asked if Abdullah ibn Umar did not divorce his wife at the command of his father, Umar ibn al-Khattab. Imam Ahmad responded by asking if his father was like Umar.
This incident serves as a significant lesson for those who demand their children to divorce their spouses without valid reasons.
In summary, it is not permissible to divorce a wife without a legitimate Islamic reason. It should also be noted that a forced divorce is not valid. However, if a divorce is given to please the parents, it is not considered forced, and such a divorce will be valid.
