A Wife’s Obligation to Obey Her Husband in Islam: Exceptions and Boundaries

Understanding the Role of a Wife in Islam: When Obedience is Not Required

Does a woman have to obey her husband?

Sheikhul Islām Ibn Taymiyyah raḥimahullāh said:

“It is obligatory upon the wife to serve her husband…because the husband is her master as per the book of Allāh, and she is a captive with him as per the sunnah of messenger of Allāh ﷺ, and what is known is that the captive and slave serves the master, and this is the truth In Shā Allāh.” [Majmu’ Al-Fatāwā (34/90)]

However, there are TWO exceptions:

EXCEPTION 1. She must not obey him if he commands her to do acts of disobedience; either by neglecting an obligation or committing a prohibition.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

((لَا طَاعَةَ لِمَخْلُوقٍ فِي مَعْصِيَةِ اللهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ))

“There is no obedience to any created being if it involves disobedience to Allah Azza wa Jall.”

[Bukhari (7257), Muslim (1840), this is the wording of Ahmad (1095)]

Sheikhul Islām Ibn Taymiyyah rahimahullah sad:

((الْوَاجِب عَلَيْهَا طَاعَة زَوجهَا إِذا لم يأمرها بِمَعْصِيَة)).

“It is obligatory for her to obey her husband as long as he does not command her to commit a sin.” [Mukhtaṣar Al-Fatāwā Al-Miṣriyyah, 347]

EXCEPTION 2: She does not have to obey him if this will cause her harm or lead to her rights being neglected.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

((لَا ضَرَرَ وَلَا ضِرَارَ))

“There should be neither harming nor reciprocating harm.” [Ibn Majah (2340), authenticated by Sheikh Albāni]
