We live in an era of instant gratification, where waiting has become almost alien to us. We want results immediately, whether it’s in our personal lives, careers, or relationships. Yet, if we pause and reflect, we find that Allāh ﷻ constantly teaches us a profound lesson through His creation, His commands, and His guidance: everything is a process, and all things take time.
This divine lesson is deeply embedded in the very fabric of existence. Allāh ﷻ, the Creator of the universe, who possesses unlimited power and authority, reminds us that even the most magnificent aspects of creation were not instantaneous but unfolded over time.
Allāh ﷻ mentions in the Qur’an:
“Indeed, your Lord is Allāh, who created the heavens and earth in six days.”
(Surah Al-A’raf, 7:54)
This is a striking statement. Allāh ﷻ, who says in another verse:
“Indeed, Our word to a thing when We intend it is but that We say to it, ‘Be,’ and it is.”
(Surah An-Nahl, 16:40)
He could have created the universe in an instant, yet He chose to create it over six days. Why? This is a divine lesson in patience, planning, and the gradual unfolding of events.
In this, there is wisdom for us. The creation of something magnificent often requires time, effort, and patience. If the heavens and the earth— with their immense beauty, complexity, and order— were created over a process, how much more should we accept that our own goals, dreams, and aspirations will take time to materialize?
Consider the creation of a human being. Allāh ﷻ says:
“We created man from an essence of clay. Then We placed him as a drop of fluid in a safe place. Then We made that drop into a clinging form, and then We made that form into a lump of flesh, and We made that lump into bones, and We clothed those bones with flesh, and later We made him into other forms. Glory be to Allāh, the best of creators!”
(Surah Al-Mu’minun, 23:12-14)
A human child could have been created instantly, but Allāh designed the process to take stages over approximately nine months. Each stage is crucial for the proper development of the baby. The growth is gradual, from a microscopic drop to a fully formed human being. This teaches us to trust the process, knowing that every phase serves a purpose in achieving the final result.
In this, there is a lesson: if we rush any stage of growth—whether it is physical, emotional, or spiritual—we may compromise the integrity of the outcome.
Similarly, the mission of our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ could have been completed in a short time. Allāh ﷻ could have changed the hearts of the people of Makkah overnight. Yet, He chose for the final revelation to be delivered gradually over 23 years.
This gradual revelation allowed the companions to internalize the Qur’an, implement its teachings, and undergo a spiritual and societal transformation. Allāh ﷻ says:
“And it is a Qur’an which We have divided [into parts], that you might recite it to the people over a prolonged period. And We have revealed it gradually.”
(Surah Al-Isra, 17:106)
During this period, the Prophet ﷺ faced immense challenges: persecution, boycott, battles, and personal losses. Yet, he remained patient, steadfast, and trusting in Allāh’s plan. His mission required continuous effort, patience, and reliance on Allāh ﷻ.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ emphasized the importance of patience as a key to success. In a hadith, he said:
“And know that victory comes with patience, relief with affliction, and ease with hardship.”
(Hadith Nawawi #19)
This hadith reminds us that victory—whether it is personal, spiritual, or communal—comes with perseverance. When we face difficulties, it is easy to become disheartened and give up. However, success is not an event that occurs suddenly; it is the result of continuous effort, trust in Allāh, and unwavering patience.
Patience (sabr) is one of the most emphasized virtues in the Qur’an. Allāh ﷻ says:
“Indeed, Allāh is with those who are patient.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:153)
This companionship of Allāh is not a small matter. When we are patient, we are not alone—Allāh is with us, guiding us, protecting us, and ultimately rewarding us. He also says:
“So be patient. Indeed, the promise of Allāh is truth. And do not let those who lack certainty discourage you.”
(Surah Ar-Rum, 30:60)
Here, we are reminded that the promise of Allāh is true, but it requires patience to see it fulfilled. Whether it is the promise of success in this world or the promise of eternal bliss in the Hereafter, we must trust the process and remain patient.
In a world where instant results are often glorified, Islam teaches us that true success lies in trusting the process, embracing patience, and relying on Allāh’s perfect plan. Whether it is the creation of the universe, the development of a human being, or the mission of the Prophet ﷺ, all great things take time.
So, when you find yourself frustrated or discouraged by delays, remember:
May Allāh ﷻ grant us the strength to be patient, the wisdom to trust His timing, and the perseverance to continue striving for His pleasure. Ameen.
