Is Naming a Child “Marwan” Permissible? Impact on Character and Health Explained

Is It Permissible to Name a Child “Marwan”? Understanding the Influence of Names on Character and Health

Question: What is the ruling on naming a child “Marwan”? Does a name affect a person’s character or health, especially if a child is frequently ill? Can a name be the cause of illness?

Answer: There is no harm in naming a child “Marwan.” Names do not affect a person’s character or health. A name is simply a means of identification and recognition. However, it is good to choose a name with a positive meaning, but names themselves do not have any inherent influence on a person’s character or health.

It seems there might be some misunderstanding regarding the historical figure Marwan ibn al-Hakam. Some scholars consider him a companion (Sahabi) while others consider him a follower (Tabi’i). There are misconceptions spread about him, particularly among Shia Muslims. We should not fall into such misunderstandings. Naming a child “Marwan” is permissible and will not have any negative impact on the child.
