The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) forewarned his Ummah about the challenges that would arise after his departure, and he provided guidance on how to navigate these challenges. The narration in question emphasizes two important realities: the inevitability of trials and the necessity of adhering to the Sunnah and the methodology of the righteous predecessors.

1. The Reality of Trials in Life

Allah, in His infinite wisdom, tests His servants to purify them, strengthen their faith, and distinguish those who are sincere from those who are not. Trials are not limited to physical hardships; they also manifest as ideological, societal, and spiritual challenges.

The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said:

“Indeed, the one who lives long amongst you will see a lot of differences, and beware of newly invented matters (in the religion), because it is misguidance. So whoever amongst you reaches that, upon him to adhere to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided khulafaa, and bite onto it with the molar teeth.” (Sunan Abi Dawood, 4607)

This hadith highlights several key points:

• The Prophecy of Division: The Prophet (ﷺ) foretold that the Ummah would face divisions and differences, both in religious and worldly matters.
• The Danger of Innovations (Bid’ah): He warned against newly invented matters in religion, as they lead to misguidance. Any deviation from the pure teachings of Islam is a step away from the straight path.

Allah chose them to accompany His Prophet and to establish His religion, so recognize their status and follow in their footsteps and adhere as much as you can to their manners and conduct, for they were upon upright guidance.”

a. The Living are Not Safe from Trials

Even the most pious and knowledgeable individuals are susceptible to falling into error or being influenced by personal desires or societal pressures. Therefore, blind following of any living person without scrutiny is discouraged.

b. The Companions as Role Models

The companions of the Prophet (ﷺ) were chosen by Allah to accompany His Messenger and to lay the foundation of Islam. Their understanding of the religion is unparalleled, as they directly witnessed the revelation and were trained by the Prophet (ﷺ) himself.

• They possessed purity of heart (free from hypocrisy and malice).
• They had profound knowledge rooted in revelation and the guidance of the Prophet (ﷺ).
• They were simple and straightforward in their approach, without unnecessary complications or philosophical interpretations that deviate from the core teachings of Islam.

Imam Ibn Rajab Al-Hanbali (رحمه الله) beautifully explained the importance of adhering to the understanding and teachings of the pious predecessors (Salaf). He said:

“There is not to be found in the statements of those who came after the pious predecessors (any) truth, except that it is found in their statements with a more concise wording and a shorter expression. There is not to be found in the statements of those who came after them (any) falsehood, except that there is in their statements that which clarifies its falsity for the one who understands and contemplates.”

b. The Danger of Neglecting Their Knowledge

Those who abandon the teachings of the Salaf risk falling into confusion and misguidance. The Salaf clarified the truth and exposed falsehood in their time, and their guidance remains relevant for all subsequent generations.

a. Prioritize Seeking Knowledge

• Avoid relying on opinions or interpretations that contradict the foundational teachings of Islam.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
“Whoever treads a path in search of knowledge, Allah makes the path to Paradise easy for him.” (Sahih Muslim, 2699)

b. Beware of Innovations (Bid’ah)

• Any practice or belief introduced into the religion that was not part of the original teachings is a deviation.
• Always ask: “Did the Prophet (ﷺ) or his companions practice this?” If the answer is no, it is likely an innovation.

c. Stay Connected to the Scholars of Ahlus-Sunnah

• Connect with scholars who adhere to the Qur’an and Sunnah according to the understanding of the Salaf.
• Be cautious of those who promote modernist interpretations or deviate from the traditional understanding of Islam.

d. Develop a Strong Relationship with Allah

• Increase in acts of worship, especially those that are rooted in the Sunnah, such as prayer, fasting, and remembrance of Allah (dhikr).
• Sincerely supplicate to Allah for guidance and protection from trials.
