Can Teachers Impose Monetary Fines on Students? Islamic Ruling on Financial Penalties
Question: Is it permissible for a teacher to fine students as a form of punishment?
Answer: Imposing monetary fines on students in schools for being late or committing mistakes is not permissible in Shari’ah. A query regarding such financial fines imposed by some tribal groups for certain actions was addressed to the Permanent Committee for Islamic Research and Fatwa. The committee replied:
“Whoever imposes a financial fine on someone for doing this or that is committing an impermissible act, as the authority to impose financial penalties does not rest with individuals but with the judges in Shari’ah. Hence, abandoning such fines is obligatory.” (Fatwa No: 20904)
