Is Saying ‘Happy Birthday’ Considered Shirk in Islam?

The Islamic Perspective on Wishing ‘Happy Birthday’ and ‘Merry Christmas

Question: Is saying “Happy Birthday” considered shirk (associating partners with Allah)?

Answer: Simply saying “Happy Birthday” is not considered shirk because it does not involve any elements of shirk. However, saying “Merry Christmas” can involve shirk because Christians believe that Christmas is the day when the son of God was born. Therefore, it is advised to avoid saying “Merry Christmas.” Additionally, it is also recommended not to say “Happy Birthday” as congratulating someone on their birthday is not considered permissible.
