In life, we are often faced with moments that seem incomprehensible—moments when hardship strikes and the world around us feels uncertain and bleak. We may find ourselves wondering, Why is this happening to me? or Why is this happening now? The pain, the loss, the difficulties—they all feel overwhelming. But in these moments, it is crucial to remind ourselves of the wisdom and mercy embedded within every challenge that Allah, in His infinite wisdom, allows us to face.
When you find yourself struggling, remember the story of Khidr ( عليه السلام), a servant of Allah who was blessed with knowledge and insight beyond human comprehension. His story, particularly the incidents that took place with Prophet Musa ( عليه السلام), is a powerful reminder that what may seem like misfortune or hardship to the human eye could be a manifestation of mercy from Allah. Sometimes, we don’t see the full picture, but Allah knows what is best for us, and His plan is always for our ultimate good.
Let us reflect on the actions of Khidr ( عليه السلام) as narrated in the Quran, where he did things that seemed difficult to understand:
These actions highlight the profound truth that Allah’s plans are not always immediate in their understanding, but in the long run, His wisdom surpasses human comprehension. What may seem like hardship, loss, or a moment of despair can, in reality, be a great mercy and protection for us in ways we cannot imagine.
The lesson here is simple yet profound: Allah’s plan for us is always good, even when we cannot see it. We are limited in our vision, and our understanding of what is happening in our lives is often confined to the present moment. However, Allah, the Most Wise, sees the past, the present, and the future. He knows what will bring us closer to Him and what will ultimately be most beneficial for our hearts, our lives, and our eternal destinies.
This is why the Quran reminds us:
“…But perhaps you hate something and it is good for you; or you love something and it is bad for you. And Allah knows while you do not know.”
— Surah Al-Baqarah (2:216)
When we face difficulties, it is natural to feel frustrated, confused, and even hopeless. But remember, every trial is part of Allah’s greater plan for us, and in the end, it will lead to something better—either in this world or the next. Trust that Allah, in His infinite mercy, is protecting us and guiding us to something more beautiful than we can imagine.
One of the greatest acts of worship and submission we can do in the face of hardship is to place our complete trust in Allah. The concept of tawakkul means to rely on Allah entirely, while also making the effort and taking the necessary steps. It is a balance of action and reliance, understanding that we cannot control everything, but Allah can.
In times of difficulty, it is essential to remind yourself:
“The plan of Allah for you is ALWAYS good.”
— Imam al-Ghazali (رحمه الله)
When you face challenges, say to your heart: There is khayr (good) in this that I cannot see right now. Khayr for my dunya (worldly life) and for my akhira (Hereafter). Trusting in Allah’s wisdom is an act of deep faith, and tawakkul helps keep us grounded in the face of uncertainty.
It is not easy to surrender our will to Allah’s plan, especially when the road is filled with pain, loss, or disappointment. But if we reflect on the stories in the Quran, we see that those who endured the most severe trials—like the Prophets and righteous individuals—found peace and reward through their complete submission to Allah. In the words of the Prophet (ﷺ):
“When Allah loves a people, He tests them.”
— At-Tirmidhi
The greatest rewards come with the greatest trials. Every hardship we face in this life is an opportunity to grow closer to Allah, strengthen our faith, and build our character. Even in the midst of difficulty, if we continue to have hope in Allah’s plan, we will find tranquility in our hearts.
When facing hardship, it is essential to remember the ultimate truth: Allah knows but you do not know. We are not always meant to understand the reasons behind every trial, but we must believe with certainty that whatever happens to us is part of a greater divine plan. Every test is a means of purification, a way to bring us closer to Allah and to cleanse our hearts.
As we navigate the complexities of life, we should strive to embody the words of Imam al-Ghazali (رحمه الله):
“You must convince your heart that whatever Allah has decreed is most appropriate and most beneficial for you.”
This is the essence of surrender—submission to the will of Allah, trusting that whatever happens is for our ultimate benefit.
No one ever desires hardship, nor should we seek it. However, we must always remember that when difficulties arise, there is always a hidden blessing within it. Allah, in His mercy, has a plan that surpasses our understanding. He knows what is best for us and will never leave us without wisdom in our trials. As difficult as life’s challenges may be, the promise of a greater reward and a brighter future is certain for those who place their trust in Allah.
May Allah grant us patience and fortitude in times of hardship, and may He bless us with the strength to always trust in His plan. May He guide us through every storm and grant us success in both this life and the Hereafter. Ameen.
Allahumma Ameen.
