Permissibility of Hijab Observance During Medical Procedures: A Guide for Muslim Women

Understanding Hijab and Medical Necessity: What Muslim Women Should Know About Endoscopy

Question: If a woman who observes hijab needs to undergo an endoscopy and no female doctor is available, is it permissible for her to uncover her face in front of a male doctor?

Answer: If a Muslim woman needs to undergo an endoscopy, the first effort should be to find a female doctor. If, despite searching, a female doctor is not available, then it is permissible for the Muslim woman to undergo the endoscopy with a male doctor. In such a case, she may reveal the necessary parts of her body for the procedure, as medical treatment is considered a necessity, and Islam provides allowances for necessities.

Allah Almighty says: "But if one is forced by necessity, neither desiring it nor transgressing its limit, there is no sin upon him" (Al-Baqarah: 173).
