Is Silk Haram for Men in Islam? A Guide to Fabric and Sewing

The Islamic Ruling on Silk for Men: What’s Allowed and What’s Not

Question: Is there a specific type of silk prohibited for men? What about sewing silk garments?

Answer: Unlike women, men are prohibited from using all types of silk, whether thick or thin, for clothing, handkerchiefs, pillows, or bedding. Hudhayfah (RA) reported that the Prophet ﷺ forbade eating and drinking from gold and silver utensils, wearing silk and brocade, and sitting on them.

(Sahih Bukhari: 5837)

Silk itself is not inherently haram; it is permissible for women to use. Therefore, its trade and sewing are also allowed. Men, however, should avoid any silk product.

If the fabric is primarily silk, men must not use it. However, a fabric with minimal silk or made from artificial threads can be used by men. A tailor should adhere to these rulings while sewing garments for men or women.
