Performing Hajj Badal: Eligibility and Conditions
Question: A man has passed away, leaving behind six sons. Three of them are financially well-off and have performed Hajj, while the other three are poor and have not performed Hajj. The sons wish to perform Hajj on behalf of their deceased father. Who should perform the Hajj: one who has already performed Hajj or one who has not yet performed Hajj but can be sponsored?
Answer: For Hajj Badal (performing Hajj on behalf of someone else), it is a necessary condition that the person performing Hajj Badal must have already performed their own Hajj. Therefore, among the sons, the one who has already performed his own Hajj can perform Hajj on behalf of their deceased father. It is not necessary that the son himself performs the Hajj; they can also pay someone else who has already performed their own Hajj to do it on behalf of their father. If they wish for a poor son who has not performed Hajj to do it, he must first perform his own Hajj and then, in the following year, he can perform Hajj Badal for his father.
