The Obligation of Jumu’ah Prayer: Can I Miss It for Work or School?

The Importance of Jumu’ah Prayer in Islam: Understanding the Ruling

Question: Some people living in Europe are allowed to perform Jumu’ah (Friday) prayers, while others are not due to job requirements. They have to stay there for their jobs, which they earn through halal means, but they are not given leave or a break to perform Jumu’ah. Some people say that Jumu’ah is not obligatory for them in this situation. What is the correct ruling? Should they perform Jumu’ah or leave their jobs? Similarly, many students find it difficult to leave their universities for Jumu’ah prayers.

Answer: A Muslim is obligated to perform the five daily prayers, and for men, Jumu’ah prayer is also obligatory. Therefore, wherever Muslims live and can hear the Adhan (call to prayer), they must attend the mosque and perform the prayer in congregation, whether it is Jumu’ah or other prayers.

Regarding the issue of companies or universities where Muslims are not allowed to go out for Jumu’ah prayer, all the Muslims present should gather in a suitable room or on a roof and perform the Jumu’ah prayer. Whoever among them can lead the Jumu’ah prayer should do so. If no one is capable of delivering the Khutbah (sermon), they can read from a book or invite a scholar from outside to lead the prayer. If there is no mosque for Muslims, no Adhan is heard, and there are not enough Muslims to establish Jumu’ah, then they should perform the Dhuhr prayer instead.

Remember, Jumu'ah prayer is a very important act of worship. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever neglects three Jumu'ah prayers out of negligence, Allah will place a seal over his heart" (Abu Dawood: 1052).

It is not enough for a Muslim to only perform Jumu’ah prayer; the five daily prayers are also obligatory. If a job or education always requires someone to miss prayers, then such earnings or education are of no benefit if they improve one’s worldly life but ruin the life of the Hereafter.

We were created to worship Allah, and worship is the most important aspect of our lives. Therefore, if someone works or studies in a place where they have to miss prayers, they should change their place to one where they can perform their worship. Alhamdulillah, the earth of Allah is vast.
