The Prohibition of Consuming Al-Jallaalah: A Guide to Islamic Dietary Laws

What has come concerning the foods, 12th Lesson | Benefits from Muntaqaa Ibn Al-Jarood

Our Shaykh, the ‘Allaamah, the Sincere Advisor, Abu ‘Abdirrahman Yahya bin ‘Ali Al-Hajoori – may Allaah preserve him –

The prohibition of drinking the milk of the ‘Jallaalah’ (animals which eat from the impurities) and eating its meat

The Hadith

887 – ‘Abdullah bin Haashim narrated to us, he said Yahya narrated to us meaning Ibn Saeed, on the authority of Hishaam meaning Ad-Dustawaa’ee, on the authority of Qataadah, on the authority of ‘Ikrimah, on the authority of Ibn ‘Abbaas may Allah be pleased with them, he said:”The Messenger of Allaah ﷺ prohibited from the milk of the ‘Jallaalah’ (animals which eat from the impurities) and the ‘Mujathimah’ (animals which are hunted) and from the drinking from the opening of the drinking vessels.

  • ‘Abdullah bin Haashim: Ibn Hayyaan al-Abdi
  • Yahya bin Sa’eed
  • Hishaam Al-Dustawaa’ee: His father is Sanbar
  • Qataadah: He is Ibn Da’aamah (Abu Al-Khattaab As-Sadoosee)
  • ‘Ikrimah: Al-Barbaree the freed slave of Ibn ‘Abbaas.
  • On the authority of Ibn ‘Abbaas may Allah be pleased with them  the scholar and scribe, translator of the Quran.

The chain of the hadeeth

The men are all trustworthy and the hadith was reported by at-Tirmidhi and others by way of Hishaam and  from the way of Shu’bah on the authority of Ahmed and it came on the authority of Khalid Al-Hathaa on the authority of ‘Ikrimah on the authority of Ibn ‘Abbaas and the most authentic path is what was reported by Tirmidhi.

888 – Ibn Ul-Muqri’ narrated to us, he said Sufyan narrated to us, on the authority of Ayyub, on the authority of Abee Qilaabah, on the authority of Zahdam al-Jarmee, that a man refrained from eating chicken and he said I saw it eating something impure so I detested it, so Abu Musa, may Allaah be pleased with him, said: ” I saw the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ eat it.”

The Hadith is authentic, reported by Bukhari and Muslim

(The prohibition of the milk of the ‘Jallaalah’📝)

The ‘Jallaalah’ is the animals which eat from the impurities

The foundation in prohibiting its milk

➡️ the statement of Allaah:

 (وَيُحِلُّ لَهُمُ الطَّيِّبَاتِ وَيُحَرِّمُ عَلَيْهِمُ الْخَبَائِث)

Which translates to what means:

(he allows them the lawful At-Taiyibat [(i.e. all good and lawful)], and prohibits them as unlawful Al-Khaba’ith [(all things impure)].

So when it could cause harm to the one drinking or eating it was prohibited.

Benefit

➡️ the ‘Jallah’ is the ‘Ba’rah’ or ‘Ba’r’ (manure), and it’s plural is ‘Jallaalaat’

Issue

Al-Jallaalah is that which eats abundantly from the impurities, as if it eats a small portion then it doesn’t affect it and it is not called ‘Jallaalah’.

➡️ So if the colour or meat or milk changes it becomes impure.

Issue:

📝Is the ‘Jallaalah’ withheld?

It is authentically established on the authority of Ibn ‘Umar that he withhold the ‘Jallaalah’ from amongst the chickens for three days.

It’s been said that the cow is withheld from for 40 days

That which is more apparent in correctness is that even if they are withheld and separated for less than this, the signs and effects of impurities would depart.

Conclusion

That what is affected by impurities is stayed away from.

➡️ Vegetables if they have been  irrigated by sewage water it has the same ruling as the ‘Jallaalah’.

So if it is irrigated before its harvest with pure water the ruling will be that it was withheld so it can be eaten.

⬆️ The Hadeeth of this chapter benefit the prohibition due to his statement the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ prohibited.

Al-Jallaalah is every animal that eats the impurities, and the ‘Jallah’ is the ‘Ba’rah’ (manure).

Al-Mujathimah: Every animal that is aimed at and sought to kill is a game.

Ibn Battaal mentioned concerning the ‘Mujathimah’ many meanings

1 – ➡️ It is said that it is posted up for and aimed at and it is called Al-Masboorah.

2 – ➡️ It is said it is like the ‘Mawqoodhah’ the fattaly wounded which fell and became a carcass.
