Is Saying “Cheers” and Drinking Haram in Islam?

The Islamic Perspective on Saying “Cheers” and Drinking

Question: Is saying “cheers” and drinking a drink (like water or juice) haram?

Answer: Firstly, anything that is halal remains halal, regardless of words or gestures. However, the act of saying “cheers” and clinking glasses has a specific context. This practice originates from disbelievers, particularly those engaged in immoral activities, who use this gesture while drinking alcohol. Over time, it became their symbol and was adopted by others.

Muslims should avoid adopting such symbols, especially those associated with immoral or un-Islamic activities. Islam provides better etiquettes for eating and drinking, and Muslims should adhere to them.
