Dua (supplication) holds a central place in the life of a believer, serving as a profound connection between the servant and their Creator. Allah commands us in the Qur’an:
“And your Lord says, 'Call upon Me; I will respond to you.'”
(Surah Ghafir: 60)
One of the simplest yet most comprehensive supplications was taught by the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) to his companions. It is a powerful reminder that the essence of dua lies in sincerity and seeking Allah’s mercy and guidance.
Tariq bin Ashyam (رضي الله عنه) reported:
Whenever a man entered the fold of Islam, the Prophet (ﷺ) would show him how to perform Salah and then direct him to supplicate:
“Allahumm-aghfir li, warhamni, wa-hdini, wa ‘afini, warzuqni”
(O Allah! Forgive me, have mercy on me, guide me, guard me against harm, and provide me with sustenance and salvation).[Muslim]
In another narration, when a man asked the Prophet (ﷺ):
“O Messenger of Allah! What shall I say if I want to pray to my Lord?” the Prophet (ﷺ) replied:
“Say: ‘Allahumma-ghfir li, warhamni, wa ‘afini, warzuqni.’ Surely, this supplication is better for you in this life and in the Hereafter.”
[Riyad as-Salihin 1469, Muslim]
Each word of this dua reflects the deep wisdom of Islam and its holistic approach to both spiritual and worldly well-being:
The Prophet (ﷺ) described this supplication as being better for us in both this life and the Hereafter. It gathers all the essential needs of a believer into a few concise words:
This balance is a hallmark of Islamic teachings, emphasizing that a believer should strive for the best of both worlds.
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), in his infinite wisdom, provided us with this concise yet profound dua to seek what we need for this world and the Hereafter. Its beauty lies in its simplicity and its ability to encompass every aspect of our lives.
Let us make it a part of our daily lives, teaching it to our loved ones and turning to it in moments of joy and distress. By doing so, we fulfill the command of Allah to call upon Him and unlock the countless blessings He has prepared for those who seek Him sincerely.
May Allah guide us, have mercy upon us, protect us, and bless us with abundant sustenance in this world and success in the Hereafter. Ameen.
