Question: A sister’s brother is in jail, and she is asking for a supplication (dua) to help secure his early release. Could you provide one?
Answer: We have often emphasized that when we are afflicted with a trial, we should adopt practical measures and worldly means to escape it, while also praying to Allah in our own language, especially during blessed times, by presenting our problems to Him. You can also pray by mentioning any good deeds done for the sake of Allah as a means (wasilah). Perhaps Allah will remove the hardship, just as He did for the people trapped in the cave. However, the Prophet (peace be upon him) did not provide any specific supplication for release from jail. You may recite any general supplications for hardship, but it is better to pray in your own words, as Allah hears every call.
Also, note that some innovators (bid’atis) suggest various amulets or rituals, which bring no benefit, only sin, as such practices are considered innovations (bid’ah).
It should also be noted that if someone has committed an actual crime, they should be punished accordingly so that they learn a lesson, and others are also deterred from committing crimes in society. That is why Islam has prescribed different punishments for various crimes.
