Understanding Jinn and Their Presence in the Home: What the Hadiths Really Say
Question: Some say there are four places in a house where jinn reside, including unused beds, bathrooms, hanging clothes, and near fire. Is this true, and should we sprinkle water in these areas?
Answer: The claim that jinn reside specifically in these areas lacks authentic evidence. The referenced ḥadīths, such as the one about unused beds (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 2084) or jinn being present in bathrooms (Ibn Mājah: 296), provide context but do not suggest that these places are exclusive dwelling spots for jinn.
Sprinkling water or performing other rituals in such areas is an innovation (bidʿah). Instead, to protect one’s home from jinn and shayāṭīn:
- Recite Surah al-Baqarah regularly (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 780).
- Maintain cleanliness and perform acts of worship.
Believers should strengthen their faith and avoid being influenced by baseless superstitions.
