Delaying Prayer: Is it Permissible in Islam?
Question: If a person delays their prayer to the very last moment, such as performing Fajr 10 to 15 minutes before sunrise, how is this practice viewed?
Answer: The rulings regarding delaying prayer are as follows:
1. If the person is a man, it is obligatory for him to perform all five prayers in the mosque with the congregation.
2. If a person occasionally delays a prayer due to being busy or out of necessity, there is no harm, provided they perform the prayer before its time ends. This ruling applies only in cases of necessity. For example, if someone oversleeps and wakes up just before sunrise, they should immediately perform the Fajr prayer. However, deliberately delaying Fajr regularly is wrong.
3. If a sick person cannot attend the mosque, it is permissible for them to perform the prayer even at the last time. However, even for them, performing the prayer at the earliest time is preferable.
4. As for women, congregational prayer is not obligatory, so they can perform their prayer at any time between the start and end of the prayer time. However, it is preferable for women to perform their prayers at the earliest time as well.
Finally, if a man with no valid excuse regularly delays his prayer and avoids the congregation, he will be sinful, as the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) warned those who neglect congregational prayers.
