Can a Person Who Memorizes 15 Parts of the Qur’an Be Called a Hafiz?

Understanding the Definition of a Hafiz: Memorization and Recognition

Question: If a person memorizes 15 parts (ajza) of the Qur’an, can they be called a Hafiz of the Qur’an? Is this correct?

Answer: A person who has memorized 15 parts of the Qur’an cannot be called a Hafiz of the Qur’an. A Hafiz is someone who has memorized the entire Qur’an. Furthermore, even if someone memorizes the entire Qur’an, it is not necessary to call them a Hafiz.

Memorizing the Qur’an is a blessed and praiseworthy act, but being called a Hafiz is not a requirement. Neither the Prophet (peace be upon him) nor the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) were referred to as Hafiz, despite being the greatest preservers of the Qur’an. Therefore, memorizing the Qur’an is sufficient; being called a Hafiz is not essential.
