Characteristics of the Righteous on the Day of Judgment

Hereafter Series Notes: The State of People on The Day of Resurrection

The State of The Righteous on The Day of Resurrection

Specific characteristics that give virtues on the Day of Resurrection

1) The general righteous Muslims will be stress-free:

They will have no fear, no worries, no concerns etc.
They won’t be terrified on that day.

2) Those under the shade of Allāh: Some of the righteous people will be under the shade of Allāh, on a Day when there is no shade except His. Narrated by Abū Hurayrah: The Prophet ﷺ said,

“Seven people will be shaded by Allāh under His shade on the day when there will be no shade except His. They are: (1) a just ruler; (2) a young man who has been brought up in the worship of Allāh, (i.e. worship Allāh (Alone) sincerely from his childhood), (3) a man whose heart is attached to the mosque (who offers the five compulsory congregational prayers in the mosque); (4) two persons who love each other only for Allāh’s sake and they meet and part in Allāh’s cause only; (5) a man who refuses the call of a charming woman of noble birth for an illegal sexual intercourse with her and says: I am afraid of Allāh; (6) a person who practices charity so secretly that his left hand does not know what his right hand has given (i.e. nobody knows how much he has given in charity). (7) a person who remembers Allāh in seclusion and his eyes get flooded with tears.”

Sahīh Al-Bukhārī (no. 1423).

3) Helping another Muslim, and to relieve the stress of another Muslim, and to conceal the faults of another Muslim: ‘Abdullāh Bin ‘Umar reported the Prophet ﷺ as saying:

“A Muslim is a Muslim’s brother: he does not wrong him or abandon him. If anyone cares for his brother’s need, Allāh will care for his need ; if anyone removes a Muslim’s anxiety, Allāh will remove from him, on account of it, one of the anxieties of the Day of Resurrection ; and if anyone conceals a Muslim’s fault, Allāh will conceal his fault on the Day of Resurrection.”

Sunan Abī Dāwūd (no. 4893). Classed as Sahīh by Shaykh Al-Albānī.

4) Being lenient to someone that owes you money:

Abu Mas’ud reported: The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said,

“A man from the time before you was called to account in the Hereafter. Nothing good was found with him except that he was lenient in his business with people and he would order his servant to relieve the debts of those in hardship. Allah Almighty said: We are more worthy of such actions, so overlook his sins.”

6) The Shuhadā’:

The Shuhadā’ are those that died fighting Jihād in the cause of Allāh. They will be safe from the terror of that day.

The Prophet ﷺ said: “The martyr (shaheed) has seven blessings from Allāh: ……..he will be spared the trial of the grave; and he will be secure on the Day of the Greatest Terror (the Day of Judgement)….”

Sunan al-Tirmidhi, who said it is a Hasan narration.

7) Those that control their anger: The Prophet ﷺ said,

“The one who suppresses anger and has the power to give effect to it, will be called out by Allāh, the Exalted, to the forefront of the creatures on the Day of Resurrection and he will be asked to choose any of the virgins (Hūr) of his liking.”

Sunan Abū Dāwūd and Sunan At-Tirmidhī.

This relates to men, as they are generally more angry.

8) The Mu’adhdhin (the caller to prayer): Yahyā narrated it on the authority of his uncle that he had been sitting in the company of Mu‘āwiyah Bin Abū Sufyān when the Mu’adhdhin called (Muslims) to prayer. Mu‘āwiyah said: I heard the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ saying:

“The Mu’adhdhins will have the longest necks on the Day of Resurrection.”

Sahīh Muslim (no. 387).

Will have the longest of necks on the Day of Resurrection – Meaning, it will be easy to notice them.
Everyone will be able to see and recognise him as a Mu’adhdhin.

9) Anyone who has grey hair: Reported by ‘Amr Bin Shu‘ayb, on the authority of his father and grandfather that the Prophet n said,

“Do not pluck out grey hair, for they are the Muslim’s light on the Day of Resurrection.”

Sunan Abū Dāwūd, Sunan At-Tirmidhī and Sunan An- Nasa’ī.

Grey hair is a sign of wisdom, due to getting older and learning more lessons of life.
Do not pluck the grey hair on your head beard. Dyeing it is allowed but not to black.

10) The virtues of Wudū’: Narrated by Nu‘aym Al-Mujmir: Once I went up the roof of the mosque, along with Abū Hurayrah. He performed ablution and said, “I heard the Prophet ﷺ saying,

“On the Day of Resurrection, my followers will be called “Ghurran Muhajjalīn” from the trace of ablution and whoever can increase the area of his radiance should do so (i.e. by performing ablution regularly).””

Sahīh Al-Bukhārī (no. 136).
