The Hidden Threat of Polytheism in the Ummah: Analyzing Hadith
The image above is from a Barelvi source. It contains two narrations. The first narration is authentic, while the second is weak. This image suggests that the Prophet (peace be upon him) was only concerned about the danger of showing off (riya) for his Ummah, implying that he did not fear polytheism (shirk) because the Ummah cannot commit shirk. This assertion is completely incorrect, as there are numerous texts that testify that some individuals from the Ummah will indeed commit shirk, as we are witnessing in our times.
Hadith from the Image:
- Hadith: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) warned us about the following shirk:
“Shall I not inform you of that which I fear for you more than the Dajjal? We said: Yes. He said: It is the hidden shirk: that a man stands to pray and beautifies his prayer because he sees the gaze of a man.” (Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 3389) - Hadith: Similarly, it is narrated from Shaddad bin Aws (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:
“The thing I fear most for my Ummah is polytheism (shirk) with Allah. However, I do not say that they will worship the sun, the moon, or idols, but rather they will perform actions for other than Allah and follow hidden desires.” (Ibn Majah, Book of Zuhd, Riya and Samaa: 4205 – Musnad Ahmad: 4/124)
This narration has been classified as weak by Sheikh Al-Albani (may Allah have mercy on him) in Ibn Majah (4974).
Clarification:
There is no doubt that major shirk (shirk akbar) is the greatest sin. However, the Prophet (peace be upon him) also warned his Ummah about minor shirk (shirk asghar), which is known as showing off (riya). This indicates that if the Prophet (peace be upon him) had such great fear of minor shirk (riya), how much greater would his fear have been regarding major shirk?
