Reciting the Quran as a Woman: Guidelines for Non-Mahram Men
Question: Many scholars say that if a woman is reciting the Qur’an, her voice should not be heard by non-mahram men, especially if she recites in a melodious tone. Is this correct?
Answer: If a woman is reciting the Qur’an in a place where non-mahram men are present, she should lower her voice. However, if there are no non-mahram men around, but only mahrams or no one at all, she can recite in a loud voice. The issue here is not whether the voice is melodious or not, but rather the level of the voice in the presence of non-mahram men, as explained above.
