Is Sleeping in the Morning Really a Barrier to Sustenance?

Hadith Analysis: Sleeping in the Morning and Sustenance

Question: Is this hadith authentic? The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: “Sleeping in the morning prevents sustenance.” (Musnad Ahmad: 530)

Answer: This hadith is mentioned in Musnad Ahmad as follows:

“From Amr bin Uthman bin Affan, from his father, who said: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: ‘Sleeping in the morning prevents sustenance.'”

Translation: It is narrated from Uthman (RA) that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: “Sleeping in the morning deprives a person of sustenance.”

This hadith is extremely weak. Sheikh Albani has classified it as very weak in “Da’if al-Targhib” and “Da’if al-Jami.” In the commentary of Musnad Ahmad, Shu’ayb Arna’ut has also stated that it is very weak, almost fabricated. Some scholars, like Saghani in “Al-Mawdu’at,have even considered it fabricated.

In summary, it is not proven from any authentic hadith that sleeping in the morning deprives a person of sustenance. However, this does not mean that one should skip Fajr prayer and sleep in the morning. One should sleep early and wake up for Fajr prayer to perform it in congregation. If there is a need to sleep after Fajr prayer, it is permissible.
